South Australia - Clare Valley

One of the best wine-growing regions in Australia, and perhaps the world, is South Australia's Clare Valley

Divided into three parallel valleys, each differing in terms of elevation, soil conditions and climate, the region's wines are extremely diverse. Just 90 minutes from Adelaide, it's a year-round holiday destination and boasts over 30 cellar doors. One of Australia's most beautiful regions, it has long hills and gorges and a warm, dry climate. A very nice place to spend a weekend.

THE CLIMATE

The climate is temperate continental with cool nights, warm summers and hot days. The higher elevation compared to other South Australian wine regions means cooler nights in the heat of summer and a more even and slow ripening of the fruit.

THE SOIL

These include the sandy loam of Armagh, the gray sandy loam of the Hutt River, the flat loam of Tower Hill, and the red or terra rossa of Auburn and elsewhere. This variety of soil types means that the character and taste of wines from this region can vary greatly. The soils of Terra Rossa consist of red clay on top of limestone and are particularly suitable for winemaking. This type of soil is formed when limestone weathers and dissolves, oxidizing to “rust” and leaving behind a rich red clay. Terra Rossa soils are well-drained and the soil composition allows the vines to be in perfect balance. This is a very important condition for growing quality fruit.
