A young brand, rich in history
Since 1878 the Seabrook name has been part of the Australian wine industry. The first generation, WJ Seabrook established W.J Seabrook & Son Wine Merchants in Melbourne. Soon to follow was second-generation wine merchant, wine judge and educator T.C Seabrook. Third generation, Douglas Seabrook worked in the family wine merchant business and remains to this day the longest serving Chairman of wine judge of the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards..an impressive 30 years. Douglas had a great passion for the industry and was a champion of emerging and alternate wine styles. Iain Seabrook would become the fourth generation and established a first-of-its-kind brokerage firm in the Barossa, allowing wineries to trade in bulk wine to achieve the best possible blends. T.C, Douglas and Iain created the famous Seabrook Wines label throughout the 1970s. Now fifth generation Seabrook Hamish revived the wine label in 2005 and looks after all aspects of the business.
Charged with an impressive wine industry legacy, Hamish goes quietly about his craft on his vineyard at the base of the Barossa’s eastern foothills. Sitting proudly with sweeping views over the family 20-acre block is an original settler's cottage that is now home to the wineries cellar door. Having worked in wineries around the world and throughout Australia in his early career, Hamish revived the wine label in 2005. Hamish’s approach to winemaking is hands-on. Nurturing the fruit carefully and ensuring the individual personality and character of each wine shines through. He believes there is no formula for making great wine, mother nature has a big part to play as well.
When you visit the winery cellar door you are immediately greeted by photographs and memorabilia adorning the walls that pay tribute to generations past. This flows through to the various wine labels, each telling their own unique stories of cherished family moments.
Hamish and his wife Jo, actively involve their two children in the family business. Whilst Chloe and Jack are still young they enjoy a carefree life among the vines, sometimes trying to catch an elusive bunny or two. During vintage, the children help out with grape picking, grape juice sampling, dish washing and even some grape foot stomping for good measure.
An eclectic cellar door sits within a historical Baross settler's cottage. As you move through rooms of the cottage out to the back of the property, you are greeted by a large deck with panoramic views over the 20 acres of family-owned vines. Guests are treated with exceptional hospitality and have the opportunity to indulge in regional produce, whilst sitting back and enjoying the quality wines.
