Poonawatta

Six generation Eden Valley heritage with a deep connection to the land

Poonawatta’s original ‘Old Vineyard Shiraz’ was planted in 1880.

This old vineyard is the centerpiece of our crown, and it’s such a privilege to be the custodians of these wonderful old vines, the oldest vineyard in the area. With only 900 or so original vines remaining, it’s a true living treasure.

Poona-watta takes its name from the Peramangk Aboriginal people having a fortuitous meaning with Poona meaning “good/healthy/fertile”, and Watta meaning “a person’s land or country”.

1880 Old Vineyard Shiraz

After six generations spanning 160 years of Eden Valley farming and viticulture, the centerpiece of the Poonawatta crown is the original Shiraz vineyard planted in 1880. This is the custodial inspiration for the Poonawatta brand which represents a passion for small volumes of hand-crafted wines, nurtured from soil to vine to bottle using sustainable farming practices.

Environmental Management Policy

The Environmental Management System aims to ensure sustainable farming practices and is founded on continuous improvement of environmental outcomes.

Biodiversity starts with soil health and the management of soil biota. They use only organic soil improvement practices which is the foundation of the vineyard's holistic management plan. A deliberately minimalist approach ensures their farming practices are environmentally sustainable.
