DOWIE DOOLE

DOWIE DOOLE in McLaren Vale is a story of two terroirs and time.

The McLaren Vale region has some of the oldest terroirs on the planet

In 1995 DOWIE DOOLE’s founders Drew Dowie and Norm Doole, created the label, realising the potential of their estate vineyards. The home of the winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia, has unique, ancient terroirs that produce world-class wines that can proudly challenge the best in the world. DOWIE DOOLE’s Estate Vineyards are in two of McLaren Vale’s most prized terroirs; the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs and the ancient rocks of Tatachilla. With geology as old as 650M years, some of the oldest geology vines are grown anywhere in the world. In 2015 the opportunity for Chris Thomas and a group of like-minded wine enthusiasts, to purchase the winery arose. Today Chris and his team still continue the legacy.

Cali Road Shiraz

Certain vineyards produce exceptional fruit, creating distinctive wines. Norm Doole's California Road Vineyard is one of those treasures, producing low-yielding, outstanding fruit. Reflecting the site's particular terroir, the wine is naturally bold, spicy and generous gaining further complexity from barrel fermentation and extended oak maturation, using the finest American Oak hogsheads.

Wine with an environmental conscience

Using biodynamic techniques in the vineyard means the fruit can truly express the place they are from and also the environment in and around them. Wines are crafted with minimal intervention winemaking techniques and no animal or dairy based winemaking aids are used in the creation of the wines. They are proud members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and practice generational farming - nurturing things as they are for future generations.

The new era for DOWIE DOOLE

In 2015 they purchased 35 hectares of vineyard at Tatachilla. This new vineyard adds 10 hectares of old vine grenache, planted in 1965, to the estate. In 2018 the neighboring vineyard was acquired, adding 29 hectares to the estate. This allowed to maintain a balance between the Mediterranean climate of Tatachilla and the cool sandy slopes of Blewitt Springs. 2019 saw the introduction of immersive wine experiences in their unique tasting pod that was opened - four shipping containers that have been purpose built and fitted out to showcase the wines and environment where it sits.
