Capital Wines

Fine wine & art, with a dash of political humor

A classic line up from the heart of the nation's capital

Capital Wines was established in 2008 and purchased in 2020 by Bill & Maria Mason and Colin & Kay Andrews. Bill and family also own the Kosciuszko label from the Tumbarumba region and Colin and family own the Jirra label from Jeir Station located in the Murrumbateman region. It means that three different labels now form the Capital Wines line up.  All wines exhibit classic styles from the region and most of the fruit comes from the Jeir Station property. The capital wines cellar door is located an easy 15 minute drive from the Canberra city centre and features the Kyeema art gallery, along with wine tasting facilities.

Winemakers

Canberra region winemaking consultants.

Alex McKay

A native of the Canberra region, Alex’s first role was with Lake George Winery, moving to Hardy’s Kamberra winery as a winemaker in 2000. When Hardy’s closed the facility, Alex used his knowledge and skill and began crafting wines for his own label in 2005 and also consulted to other wineries in the region.

Greg Gallagher

Another native of the Canberra region, Greg's winemaking journey began in 1977 and has worked for wineries all over Australia as well as short-term stints in Champagne (France) and the Napa Valley (USA). In 1995 Greg established his own label and remains a consultant to other wineries in the region.

While we at Capital Wines don’t take politics and life in the National capital too seriously, we do take and make our wines very seriously.

Australian politics immortalised on a wine label

The Capital Wines range labels are certainly a standout. The depictions of political life in Canberra are wry, humorous and irreverent. Each character has been cleverly illustrated to match the element of political life being referred to in the wine's name, as well as a link to the varietal.
