Winemaking & architecture collide in the heart of the Hunter Valley
Iron Gate Estate produces wine from its own 25 acre (10 Ha) Pokolbin vineyard , in our well-appointed winery alongside the vineyard. We also purchase select fruit from other premium grape-growing areas of NSW that compliment our range.
The Mediterranean style cellar door complete with hand painted tiles and an enormous tasting room provides a welcome escape from the heat on a summers day and a glowing fire during the winter months. Step outside into our colourful and fragrant courtyard for sweeping views over the wines as you sample our wines.
The magnificent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Hilltops and the Shiraz from the Hunter Valley creates a deep, blood red wine with complex aromas of cassis, cherries, prunes, tar, pepper and some dark chocolate notes from oak maturation, while the palate is just as interesting.
Iron Gate Estate was founded by Roger Lilliott when he purchased the land, on which Iron Gate Estate now stands, as a paddock in 1996.
In 2017, Roger handed over the reins of his family business to another family-owned business, Kuokai Investment Company. A well-respected award winning winemaker, Geoff Broadfield, came on board as a consultant for the 2018 and then accepted the position as Iron Gate Estate’s Head winemaker to join the new venture with The Kuokai Family. Gavin Kuo is the GM and is often seen welcoming guests in the cellar door and is always keen to showcase their wines, Scoring a 95 Halliday rating for the 2019 Fenix is one of his proudest moments and being red wine lover he is sure to have sampled a few we are sure!
Geoff Broadfield, an experienced winemaker with 37 vintages under his belt has put his own stamp on the wines and extended the varietals since joining Iron Gate back in 2018. This has resulted in some wonderful blends and Geoff's biggest joy is making wines from small parcels of fruit from the winery's own vineyards.
